FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A "dry" run for the MV John Atlantic Burr

CLACKAMAS, Ore. — January 05, 2006 — This weekend the MV John Atlantic Burr Ferry will be traveling through Portland on its way to Vancouver, British Columbia. The journey is anything but conventional.

The 292 ton MV John Atlantic Burr has spent the last 20 years shuttling passengers and automobiles across Lake Powell on the Utah-Arizona border. Declared surplus by the State of Utah the ferry was sold to BC Ferries, who will expand the ferry for use as a back-up vessel for sailing in the Vancouver, BC area. In October 2005 Emmert International pulled the vessel from Lake Powell using three tractors and a specialized 96 wheeled dolly beam transportation system.

In order to make the 1,900 mile trip from Utah to British Columbia the ferry has been segmented into 4 hull sections weighing 110,000 pounds each. The hull sections are secured to Emmert International?s specialized transportation dolly system that, with the weight of the cargo, grosses over 250,000 pounds each. The route takes the sections through Utah, Idaho, Oregon and to the Port of Tacoma, Washington, where they will be loaded onto a barge for the final leg to dry dock in Vancouver, BC. The pilot-house, skirting, and other miscellaneous pieces were transported via conventional flat bed trailers earlier this month.

Making this move demands a coordinated logistical effort. A load that measures 118 feet long, 24 feet wide, and 15 feet tall requires a tremendous amount of planning, including restricting traffic around it and even where to park it a night! Emmert International, working with State and local officials, devised a route that has already successfully delivered 2 hull sections to the Port of Tacoma.

With over thirty years experience transporting and lifting extremely large equipment, vessels, and structures, Emmert International has transported objects much heavier and much larger, but this load is very special to us as it moves very close to home.
